The test I propose you is to disable pulse audio, then try to place a call to see if it makes any difference: First kill pulseaudio: $ pulseaudio -k Remove the pulseaudio package: $ sudo aptitude remove pulseaudio (it will probably remove the meta package ubuntu-desktop, please note down any other package as you might need to reinstall them) Run the Monitor System application (under Administration->Monitor system) and make sure there is no pulseaudio process in the Process tab. If it is there, kill it. Run (or restart) Ekiga Place the call using Ekiga.
