Today Update!
"old post:
"During ubuntu install I manually reformated the fat32 filesystems to the
needed ubuntu filesystems. This might also screw the mbr, I will test later
today.""

By re-installing ubuntu 9.10 on /dev/sda and reformating the filesystem
and even disabling "grub/mbr install" in the "advanced menu" at the
"summary page" of the installer still the first 440 bytes of the mbr
gets broken. "fixing manually with dd still works!"

Disabling/uncheckbox mbr/grub install in "advanced settings" still
breaks mbr...

I will try a manually install to external usb disk and see if it still
breaks the mbr of the internal disk... keep ya updated!
