As of today it seems the problem is yet to be fixed. I'd like to summarize some of what I've collected so far. (Non-expert view).
Some persons using HP printer-scanner-copier devices found the printer working well, but the system not recognizing the scanner. In my & other cases, it was HP-915, first noticed on Ubuntu Jaunty in Apr-May 2009 when the new version of the OS was released. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7284022 http://art.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7864290 https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/72096 (This is marked solved but it was not solved.... as you can see) Other Linux OSs released at the same time also have the same problem. I confirm this for Mandriva 2009 Spring, Debian Lenny, Fedora 11 (all gnome). http://blog.linuxtoday.com/blog/2009/11/getting-the-sca.html (another poster on debian: could someone with current Ubuntu or other distros try this out & comment? ) The problem still persists a)with karmic (ubuntu), Mandriva 2010 (reports on the net) http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=120797 b)with Fedora 12 (personal experience) https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsane/+question/90048 (but, ok, this person had things working with Jaunty) If I go back to Intrepid or Hardy the device works perfectly. (am presently on Intrepid for this single reason). I think the gist is that newer versions of sane are not compatible with sane backends. ( don't remember if I tried this in May 2009. Now, the version of sane-utils on my Intrepid laptop (where scanning is fine) is 1.0.10-6ubuntu1 ) So, putting it together, 1)Many people who were previously fine with their HP printer-scanners have been having problems with (only) scanning since Apr-May 2009 to date. 2)This is a problem with Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Mandriva, since Apr-May 2009. 2)The problem may be with new versions of sane not being compatible with sane-backends (please correct (and forgive) me if my interpretation is wrong.
