I have encountered similar problems with the ZEW1605A on a previous install of
9.04 and a fresh install of 9.10. With 9.04, when the card was installed the
machine would boot until gdm started and then hang with a black screen showing
only a white box where the login textbox appears. The mouse was non-responsive
and the keyboard was dead (even hitting numlock wouldn't toggle the numlock
LED). Restart with the card removed and everything is back to normal. So then
I started the machine in recovery mode. From here, if I entered "netroot" the
machine would hang with the following error:
wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801
If I entered a root session without networking and did /etc/init.d/network
start there was no hang.
At this point I went to install 9.10. With the card installed it would
hang with the white ubuntu logo. After removing the card I was able to
proceed with installation and do a fresh install wiping out the entire
harddrive. Once the installation was complete (and I removed the CD) I
put the card back in and once again it would hang whilte booting (at the
white ubuntu logo). With 9.10, I couldn't even enter recovery mode
because it would hang on the "Starting AppArmor" startement. If I
remove the card, 9.10 boots up normally.
