Thanks for the prompt response.

I have grub 0.97 installed on my laptop. Should I upgrade it to grub-pc
instead?

Regarding the kernel, I am actually able to boot using the latest kernel,
despite
the error messages which triggered the bug report when updating the system.

I am attaching my /boot/grub/menu.lst file just in case it would help
you.
