I reinstalled the current binary driver, and now the system hangs before
showing a cursor at all - I just get a blank screen.

However, in recovery mode, I can always start up fine, executing this
script after logging in as root:

#!/bin/sh
echo start some services like the ssh daemon and apache
service ssh start
service apache2 start
echo start X
service gdm start

I always start the ssh daemon - in case the screen doesn't work, I can
then ssh in over my LAN. It would be very nice if Ubuntu always gave the
option of installing the ssh daemon in an installation - the FreeBSD
installer has a checkbox for doing that - it's very useful when things
go wrong!
