Thanks Eric, I followed the instructions to get pulseaudio just working on my PCM channel and it seems to have done the trick. I think the main problem is still in the ALSA driver due to the non-working ALSA master slider, however after stuffing around with ALSA conf files too long, it's good to see that pulseaudio can work around ALSA's shortcomings. I still wait for the day when we have a stable, unified linux sound architecture.
