The patched linked earlier does not enable PIO on the B43 for everyone. It simply allows PIO to be enabled for the B43 with a boot time option in the module/conf. This would be an ideal work around for now until the B43 driver is properly fixed.
Maybe Ubuntu kernel maintainers could apply the patch to the Lucid kernel, or someone could patch a kernel and put it up on a ppa somewhere?
