Just feedback from another user. When I switched motherboards, alsamixer master got turned down and so very low audio out. First I called command line alsamixer and used the master audio to get volume out. I then added gnome-alsamixer as an applet on my task bar. If alsamixer can effect the final audio output it should be part of the preferences->Sound applet or better yet there should be a gnome-sound applet that controls alsamixer and pulseaudio.
