Does the fact that the screen has a native resolution of 1920x1080 (full
HD) have anything to do with any of these symptoms seen?

I removed xserver-xorg-video-ati and I suppose that forces the use of a
mesa/vesa driver (I can't keep xserver-xorg-video-ati and remove
xserver-xorg-video-radeon. I guess they are dependent on each other. So
the last question in comment #26 is not valid). With this, I get the
aubergine screen with artifacts during shutdown/restart and there is the
aubergine screen with artifacts at boot as originally described. Gdm and
gnome desktop all have color problems with this (unknown to me) driver.
