So, after meticulously retracing my steps and re-installing XP, I turned the volume all the way up. I switched back to my Ubuntu HDD and the sound works. In fact, i have the opposite problem. It's WAY too loud. With the volume on both the application and mixer set at 5% it's listen- able. Anything over that is too loud. I suppose I can swap HDD's again and modulate the volume with XP until it works right on Ubuntu.
