Solution is to edit /usr/share/applications/{wesnoth-1.8.desktop,
wesnoth-1.8_editor.desktop}
change the line for icon:
Icon=wesnoth-icon
=>
Icon=wesnoth-1.8-icon
Icon=wesnoth_editor-icon
=>
Icon=wesnoth-1.8_editor-icon
--
no icons for wesnoth 1.8 in gnome menu
