the system didn't ever exit the sleep state - the battery ran out while it was
in sleep mode (18:59).
In the morning (7:48) , on bootup the network manager icon shows"Networking
disabled" and is unresponsive to right-clicking. A reboot or two later it
allows me to re-enable networking by opening the menu on right click
("Networking Enabled" is unchecked.)
