Checking out your theory I moved menu.lst out of the way. Re-ran update-grub 
with /etc/default/grub set to generate UUID's. That grub.cfg is OK for 
Lucid...but refers to /dev/hda2 as sda2. No UUID's . That leaves the Debian 
boot hanging " waiting for root file system". I have never been able to boot 
Debian squeeze when it's referred to as being on /dev/sda2. To boot Debian I 
still
have to go in and edit grub.cfg.
