I think this bug is still present in 10.04. I have noticed that lowering
the volume via the gnome utility, the master volume is decreased without
making any difference on the audio output, apart when the last 10% is
reached. Monitoring the alsamixer, when the master volume is lowered to
zero and then the FRONT volume is decreased in three steps to 0. I
notice a change is the output audio only when the FRONT volume is
changed.

~$ lspci -nn | grep Intel | grep Audio
