I encountered the same issue, i.e. usb not being detected upon
insertion. I tested autologin both on and off and there was no
difference. Still no detection. I read something about thunar. I checked
Synaptics Package Manager and found thunar was not installed. I
installed it and rebooted. No change. I then turned off the system,
inserted the usb flash drive (sandisk 4gb) and proceeded to boot. The
flash drive lit up several times during the process. I then signed in
under my user name and the flash drive was displayed on the desktop. I
was able to successfully access data on the drive. I further tested to
see if I could remove the flash drive and reinsert it. It displayed just
as before. I then removed it and inserted another flash drive (sandisk
2gb) and it too was detected. For my final test, I turned off the
laptop and turned it back on, signed in and then reinserted one of the
two flash drives. It was not detected. So, it appears that if the system
is started with the drive inserted into the usb port, it is detected.
I'm happy that I have found my workaround. I hope this helps others as
well. Now i have no idea if installing the missing thunar via Synaptics
Package Manager helped, but I'm not about to change it as of this
writing.
