I have the system upgraded till the latest packages, and it continues to
happen with gnome-terminal.
I've tried with terminator and with this it's much faster. I would say
that it's less than one second to open a new tab.
My computer is a bit old, with 1Gb of physical RAM. But I've compared the
memory usage of both programs:
zeus 5789 1.9 3.8 238944 39832 ? Sl 21:40 0:04 gnome-terminal
zeus 5790 0.0 0.0 14480 792 ? S 21:40 0:00 \_
gnome-pty-helper
zeus 5791 0.1 0.4 21724 4380 pts/0 Ss+ 21:40 0:00 \_ bash
zeus 6064 8.0 0.4 21724 4384 pts/1 Ss 21:44 0:00 \_ bash
zeus 6085 0.0 0.1 15388 1232 pts/1 R+ 21:44 0:00 \_ ps axuf
zeus 5848 0.7 3.5 349276 36808 ? Sl 21:41 0:01
/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/terminator
zeus 5851 0.0 0.0 14480 788 ? S 21:41 0:00 \_
gnome-pty-helper
zeus 5852 0.1 0.4 21720 4372 pts/3 Ss+ 21:41 0:00 \_ /bin/bash
zeus 5871 0.1 0.4 21720 4368 pts/4 Ss+ 21:41 0:00 \_ /bin/bash
And seems that gnome-terminal uses less memory than terminator. So it
should be something else...
