I have the same problems on two of the 3 desktops in our household. Both the affected machines are i686, Core 2 Duo E8400 , 4GB RAM and GeForce 9600GT GPU, which run Karmic OK. I have tried the recommended workarounds without success. I also downloaded 10.04-855gm with an earlier Kernel, but still got the black screen on boot. Comments on some forums suggest that the problem appears to have been fixed in the Beta of Meerkat, so in the absence of a fix in Lucid it looks as if I will have less hassles if I soldier-on with Karmic until Meerkat is more mature. Given that we enjoy Ubuntu through the altruism of so many good folk world-wide, I think that it is a tad churlish to be critical of unexpected bugs like this. My main concern is that the eventual upgrade of Karmic to Meerkat will not require installing Lucid; which would be a classic catch 22.
