I have another laptop where the volume keys do not work either. It seems that the xevents are registered correctly so my .Xmodmap entrys shouldn't be necessary.
.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml Seems to rely on xcfe4-volumed whereas lubuntu is using alsamixer. Not sure where this should be reported to prompt some action.
