Tony, I was going to suggest that you make sure to use the newest upstream kernel, but after testing the current stable kernel, that command still works.
I've read in a few other places that for some machines, the BIOS requires an update to allow KMS to set the brightness level. Perhaps this applies to you? Oddly, I would assume that our computers are sufficiently similar that the above solution should work for you. I'm running a Gateway NV79. But from looking at your lspci output, it seem that there is sufficient dissimilarity. I hope that you find a solution soon.
