Tony,

I was going to suggest that you make sure to use the newest upstream
kernel, but after testing the current stable kernel, that command still
works.

I've read in a few other places that for some machines, the BIOS
requires an update to allow KMS to set the brightness level. Perhaps
this applies to you?

Oddly, I would assume that our computers are sufficiently similar that
the above solution should work for you. I'm running a Gateway NV79.

But from looking at your lspci output, it seem that there is sufficient
dissimilarity. I hope that you find a solution soon.

It would be nice to be able to fix this problem and have it work as it
should, rather than me having to jump to the cli to adjust my
brightness.
