I now realise my comments were about a different kind of right-shifting behaviour which affects only the text on a line by line basis, not the whole screen, and which appears to be known as the "staircase effect". Sorry for posting off topic. But, since I started, I'll mention that I managed to solve the problem by disabling Plymouth at shutdown. I'm not sure if this has other undesirable effects, but it did sort out my shutdown messages!
