VLC is a video player, but SWF is not a video format. It's more like scripted vector graphics. Maybe you were thinking of FLV (flash video format), which is a video container format supported by VLC. I don't think that VLC will get support for full SWFs. If you want to play them, you can use the Adobe flash player or Gnash. Gnash is the most complete free software implementation of SWF, and it should play the files created with OpenOffice flawlessly.
