It works!
I changed alsa-base.conf to:options snd-hda-intel model=autoinstead of 
model=basic
That added an option in Sound Output, "Analog Speakers." When I selected it, 
sound comes from earphones if they are plugged in, otherwise from the built-in 
speakers.
