Hi thakns for the reply i chcked system > preference >start up application and apart from the printer que aplet I couldnt find anything regardign the cups. I followed the steps as in the link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1550539&page=1 and my problem is sorted now. printer is detected on start up.
