I don't want to represent myself as knowing the best way to continue investigating this issue...but if you're interested in indulging my possibly useful curiosity, would you be willing to post (i.e. attach) the output of "strace yelp", up to the point when the initial "Ubuntu Help" window comes up? (There's no need to wait until the window finishes loading, though there's no harm in doing so. strace will never actually stop writing to stderr, since it will show yelp's repeated calls to "poll" and "read".)
