Yes the problem lies in lack of w permission on the folder containing the photo. That is, although the photo did have the w permission, and was owned by me.
I didn't know about this "copy" feature of shotwell. Now that I gave w permission to the folder, and Gimp opened the photo, I noticed the filename shown by Gimp has a "_modified" postfix. I was wandering what this meant, and now it's all clear. May I suggest giving a clearer error message instead of just an "access denied" error ? Something that would explain what the program is trying to do and why it can't do it. E.g. "Can't create copy of <name of the photo> in folder <name of the folder>. Reason: access denied. For more information clik <here> (url pointing to a page or help file where the mechanism is explained)." My 2 cents. Thank you very much for your timely and helpful support.
