@martin: thanks for the kudos on 'blueCube( )' :) as for the kernel build: I've automagically gotten pd to talk to the USB audio and the Intel HDA hardware without having to use Jack...not sure how I did this but it seems that my 'problem' is solved -- not that using Jack is a problem but you'd think plugging in a USB audio card should just work without being forced to use Jack...
