Guys and gals I had the exact same problem but managed to resolve it
quite straightforwardly by going to CompizConfig Settings Manager,
scrolling down to the Utility section, selecting 'Workarounds' (if not
already selected), click on the workarounds icon, and  you will then see
a new window with a tab called General and the first entry is "Legacy
Fullscreen Support" which is probably unchecked.

Just check it to on and you should find the Geeqie goes fullscreen
without any panel intrusions.

It worked for me.
