Serge - When I change domain type to qemu in the XML file, the same VM boots fine under PAE. It is a 32bit VM with 512M of RAM. Sorry about the delayed response.
In fact, I just tried said system under KVM again and it seems bootup now freezes during grub? The last thing I see on the screen is: "GRUB loading, please wait..."
