I have the same problem. Not a muting issue. Rebooting under Windows
verified that the sound card works. I also enabled the integrated audio
on my motherboard and selected that audio instead with the same results
on Ubuntu... no sound. So, it appears it's not just the Soundblaster
card.

Investigating the /var/log/messages I did find the following:
Jan 16 10:10:39 hostname pulseaudio[2653]: ratelimit.c: 91310 events suppressed
Jan 16 10:10:44 hostname pulseaudio[2653]: ratelimit.c: 90444 events suppressed
Jan 16 10:10:49 hostname pulseaudio[2653]: ratelimit.c: 93767 events suppressed
Jan 16 10:10:54 hostname pulseaudio[2653]: ratelimit.c: 90311 events suppressed
Jan 16 10:11:14 hostname pulseaudio[2653]: ratelimit.c: 11909 events suppressed

Please let me know if any further info is needed.
