I did not have the problem when running 10.04/Lucid. You could try SystemRescueCD and see whether disks are recognised then.
I have connected 4 disks to 5723. "Orange" ports (port 0 orange/port1 white) I have in BIOS (Drive Xpert) defined as "Speed" I think. In your case the disks would show as ONE 1500 GB disk. Another option is show only one 750 GB disk. In that case you save on one ang get automatic backup on the other one. Guess you are aware the BIOS setup, however just in case.
