It in fact did not fix the problem. The problem was that writeback cache is off 
by default in Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS, but the default was on in Ubuntu Server 
8.04 LTS.  It was a backwards incompatible change that was not documented, and 
it took months of my time to resolve. The solution was to specify,
<driver name='qemu' type='qcow2' cache='writeback'/>
on all of my guest config files.
