When you say "the small icon in the right side view", I assume that you mean the Videos icon in the Find toolbar at the top of the photos view - yes?
I believe that we do show videos by default. If you run Shotwell on a clean machine (e.g. after running 'gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/shotwell'), you'll see that the Find toolbar does not appear by default and that videos are shown.
