I have discussed this with Nvidia, and the answer is "not until
something is actually plugged in". To have PulseAudio react on something
being plugged in is a bit of work and won't be ready in 11.04, but I
hope to be able to have it working better in 11.10.

(To further complicate the issue, many Nvidia DVI and/or Displayport
outputs can actually output audio, which means there can be more than
one digital output that actually works.)
