As and aside, I'm amused by this concept: "they simply use HyperTerm within a virtual machine as a substitute" My first solution was just to write my own xmodem down loader - maybe a couple hours - I used that for a couple of years, but was annoyed that sx/minicom didn't work so I eventually tracked down the problem. I think I actually did use HyperTerm with wine just to see if it worked - it did.
