I had a similar problem on Maverick. The sound would stop randomly, if
I used Rhythmbox and it was mid-way through a track it would halt
playing. If it was a website playing a video Firefox would halt and the
screen go grey. I had to kill alsa and restart it in a terminal, which
brought everything back up. This started happening around two months
ago.

Thinking I had caused a problem with an old installation I opted to do a
clean install of Natty on Friday. I still have problems with the audio.
At the moment the sound randomly cuts out and if I wait for a minute the
driver will click in again.

I have submitted this report to a thread on the ubuntuforums.org site:
http://www.alsa-
project.org/db/?f=dfd9dcb772dfe23e863f1aca4419cd562fe09339

dmesg reports: [ 11.436096] intel8x0_measure_ac97_clock: measured 55771 usecs
(2687 samples)
[ 11.436104] intel8x0: clocking to 48000

It appears a few people are reporting similar issues, is this a problem
with a kernel release?
