Please close this bug.
Unless others report this behavior as well, the problem was that (1)my
number lock key was on, and (2) turning NumLK on is a fn+F11 key combo,
which I doubt was made by the installer, though it may have been, so it
is probably my mistake, and (3) there is no light or notice on my laptop
to tell me that number lock is on.
Thank you for your time, sorry to have wasted it.
