Update: another user with a fresh gnome environment does not suffer the same problem. I think something of my .gnome* settings are messed up (though I didn't do anything special). I copied my home directory from a edgy installation on my old notebook. The other thing I noticed is that the theme manager doesn't show theme previews near theme names (screenshot attached)
