This bug is driving me insane. It makes Unity almost unusable for me. I
have two large monitors (24") with my primary display directly in front
of me and the second one angled to the left.

I am very mouse-centric (I use very few keyboard shortcuts) and having
to twist my neck all the way to the left monitor and target the mouse
across two displays just to switch apps, which I do frequently (I am a
software developer and use multiple concurrent apps constantly), is
literally causing me neck pain!

Why can't I just drag the launcher to the top/left/middle of the entire
display surface? That is by far the most intuitive UI behavior and would
solve the "launcher placement" problem i a way that works for everyone.
In 10.04 I had the launcher on my primary display, which put it in the
"middle" of my total display surface. I set it in CCSM to not dodge
windows so it always just stayed visible. This was ideal for my
situation. 11.10 has seriously regressed in this regard.

I am trying hard to like Unity, but I am close to installing the gnome
shell and being done with it.
