Public bug reported: The gcursor program, if it ever worked, has not worked since the Appearance Preference dialog was added to Gnome 2 (which selects themes, backgrounds, and theme properties such as mouse pointer styles and sizes). Xubuntu has a Settings Manager dialog which provides this functionality, including selecting the mouse pointer.
There does not seem to be such a capability under Unity. There is a mouse dialog which allows for other mouse settings, such as acceleration and double-click settings, but does not allow for selecting among mouse themes which have been installed or change mouse sizes. Gcursor IS provided and can be installed from the Ubuntu Software Center or apt-get etc. However it has never been fixed and finished, as documented in the old bugs #138491 and #663373. Finishing this program, using code from the Gnome 2 Preferences Dialog, or the corresponding Xubuntu mouse dialog, would be one solution to the lack in Unity. I checked up on this problem due to a request on a Linux-related mail list from a relative of someone with limited vision who needs a larger cursor.
