Just wanted to point out that this is still an issue with 1.8.0. In fact, it has been an issue throughout the unstable release series of liferea, though this has never happened to me with the stable 1.6.x series.
If I rebuild the unread messages search folder and refresh all feeds, the unread count drops back to zero. After a few days of usage, the phantom unread messages start to show again.
