OK. I have installed the cups-1.5.0-8ubuntu7-ppa2 (current from your
ppa), but am in doubt as to what sort of connection to use... Should it
be straight USB or can i use the dnssd definition...

Using a USB connection, selecting the printer driver Canon PIXMA MG8100
- CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7 Simplified, I sent a test page to the printer,
and it opens the print output tray, makes a lot of "print head movement"
noises (is it performing a print head clean?), whereupon it falls silent
- no print.

Printing from a mail yielded only a breif glimpse in the display of any
activity.

The jobs are consumed from the print queue.

I'll attach the cups error log.
