I remember some more: I started the upgrade with "gksudo update-manager" from a
terminal.
That command now fails with "ImportError: No module named pygtk"

Furthermore when I try and run Synaptic from the applications menu, it
tells my administrative password is incorrect. When I type my password
in instead of seeing the usual black dots for characters there is a
square white box.

Thankfully apt-get still works. 'sudo apt-get check' reports no errors.
Now about to try 'sudo apt-get upgrade'.
