Hmm OK, well looking at the GRUB info you posted before you have For the normal boot: linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-15-generic root=UUID=7bdac5f7-9566-4964-b8b8-547ce063de54 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-15-generic and for recovery mode: linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-15-generic root=UUID=7bdac5f7-9566-4964-b8b8-547ce063de54 ro recovery nomodeset video setup/modeset wouldn't be an unusual cause of black screens/hung boots, so try booting to the grub menu, then edit the normal boot line and remove the quiet splash and vt.handoff=7 and add in the nomodeset and see if it works.
