Hmm OK, well looking at the GRUB info you posted before you have

For the normal boot:
 linux  /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-15-generic 
root=UUID=7bdac5f7-9566-4964-b8b8-547ce063de54 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7
 initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-15-generic

and for recovery mode:
 linux  /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-15-generic 
root=UUID=7bdac5f7-9566-4964-b8b8-547ce063de54 ro recovery nomodeset

video setup/modeset wouldn't be an unusual cause of black screens/hung boots, 
so try booting to the grub menu,
then edit the normal boot line and remove the quiet splash and vt.handoff=7 and 
add in the nomodeset    and see if it works.
