I couldn't reproduce this either, and when I retried it in the test
rebuild archive it succeeded:

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/test-
rebuild-20120201/+build/3139265

So this was probably the fault of a broken .la file in some other
package which is now fixed.
