I also get a very similiar(related?) segfault when hovering over the sound icon
in unity 2d:

Though I'm not running multiple monitors. Instead I've disabled compositing in
xorg.conf with
Option "Composite" "Disable"
And also I have added a few workspaces to metacity settings with gconf-
editor.
