Yes, I have problem with it too. My temporary solution is:

sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=xx

where 00:02.0 is my device (maybe works for you too) and xx is value in
hex from 0 to ff - it works fine for me

I am create short script for console and for gui too, and create alias
to ~/.bashrc for run that script. For now it is fastest changing
brightness on my HP ProBook 4510s
