There were two things I had done that same week that could explain why this was happening, since after I changed that, it never happened again:
-when installing Jetbrains PHP I changed the default java program from openjdk to "Sun"'s java. When I reverted this, I was able to download and install the updates, nevertheless I was still having similar error messages when running other programs. -I had just added 4 GB of RAM but I hadn't increased the swap partition. After I did this, I never had memory allocation errors again. So it was most likely not a bug..
