I had lots of such crashes in Gnome-shell (3.0 or 3.2, did not test with 3.4).

I suspected a mis-behaviour in how modal windows operate.
Indeed, switching the way they are attached to the parent window completely 
solved the problem.

I haven't had any more crashes for the last 3 or 4 weeks, after "detaching" the 
modal windows.

My configuration is as follow :
Fedora 16
Linux 3.3.2-6.fc16.x86_64
Juniper [ATI Radeon HD 5600/5700] [1002:68B9]
AMD Proprietary drivers (same problems with 12.1, 12.2, 12.3)
