You will find the same behaviour with e.g. json files. This issue was brought up on the mailing list and it is considered "as designed". Basically the project browser (ProjectOthersBrowser _openItem) will only send an "open" event for items where the mime type starts with "text". Previously xml files would have had a text/xml mime type, they are likely now showing up as application/xml (i.e. same problem as application/json).
Special casing for application/json and application/xml might be warranted, but as Eric4 is no longer the dev focus I'm not sure it would be likely to go in.
